SYDNEY: Infidelity remains a minor issue for Australian families and relationships. According to the 2006 Relationships Indicators Survey, infidelity scored responses of less than 10 per cent as a reason for relationships being in trouble these days.

Anne Hollands, CEO of Relationships Australia,  says, “It could be sexual or emotional infidelity. The partner could be emotionally closer to someone else at work. This often has more effect on the relationship than a one night stand.” In 2006, the High Court here ruled that husbands and wives who cheat have no legal obligation to disclose their infidelity, declaring such matters “should be left to the morality of spouses.”

Rita, editor of an Indian community newspaper in Sydney, recollects a few cases of infidelity which play like soap operas. “One of my friends was married to a man who already had 4 children out of a marriage. Now he has had an affair with another woman and she is a single mother of an 8-year-old,” says Rita.

Besides Shane Warne’s string of sex scandals, Australia’s car racing legend Peter Brock has had a scandalous personal life. In her book, Peter Brock: Living with a Legend, published shortly before the couple broke up, his former partner Beverley Brock wrote revealingly about Brock’s popularity with women. “I’ve seen women slip him notes without hesitation, and I have even seen older women give him their daughters’ numbers,” she said. Although they never formally tied the knot, the couple were partners for 28 years. She took his name and they had three children.

There are advertisements for infidelity spy services and products on websites. Cheaters, a weekly reality show, where people suspected of cheating on their partners are investigated by the Cheaters Detective Agency, remains popular on Australian television.
