NEW DELHI: The Gujarat government on Friday told the Supreme Court that Kausarbi, wife of Sohrabuddin Sheikh who was killed in a fake encounter in 2005, may also have been murdered.

The government had earlier said Kausarbi was missing. But on Friday, senior counsel KTS Tulsi, who is representing the state, admitted that she may have been killed, along with her husband, in November 2005.

The SC bench adjourned the hearing till Monday and said it may order execution of the habeas corpus petition filed by Sheikh’s brother Rubabuddin. The court said it would also decide on the same day whether the case should be handed over to the CBI, a plea made by Rubabuddin. Attorney-General Milon Banerjee and Additional Solicitor-General Gopal Subramanium, who has been assisting the court in the case, also pressed for a CBI inquiry.

Earlier, following a SC directive, the state had ordered the arrest of three senior IPS officers involved in the fake encounter. They were — ex-director of Gujarat ATS D G Vanzara, SP of ATS Rajkumar Pandiyan and SP of the Special Task Force, Rajasthan, Dinesh Kumar.

The police had then claimed that Sheikh had links with the Lashkar-e-Tayiba and was planning to kill Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi.

Sheikh and his wife were travelling from Hyderabad to Sangli, Maharashtra, when the Gujarat ATS and the Rajasthan STF picked them up, along with another unidentified man. Sheikh was later killed in the fake encounter. The third man was also allegedly killed.

Sheikh's family members in Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh, have welcomed the court's order. "I am happy with the court's judgment. Those responsible for killing my son and daughter-in-law will be punished," said Sheikh's mother Jebunisa.

Meanwhile, Gujarat home minister Amit Shah has come under a lot of flak for allegedly trying to shield the arrested IPS officers.
