Giving a clean chit of sorts to Director General of Police Dr PS Pasricha on Monday, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister RR Patil informed the Legislative Assembly that the Bombay High Court had earlier quashed a petition challenging Dr Pasricha’s appointment on similar grounds. So much so that the HC had fined the petitioner of Rs20,000.

Replying to a debate kicked off by an adjournment motion notice moved by Eknath Khadse (BJP) and others, the Home Minister stated that the government will take action against police officers who have amassed disproportionate assets. Patil added that the government is preparing a list of all such officers.

Patil however turned down the Opposition’s demand for handing over the probe to the CBI. He added that since 1975 Dr Pasricha has been regularly apprising the government about the details of his properties purchased.

Seeking to move the notice, Khadse argued that as per the Supreme Court ruling an IAS or IPS officer of the same rank could not investigate the matter and hence the probe has to be given to the CBI. He added that Director General of Anti Corruption Bureau comes under the control of the DGP and hence cannot be expected to investigate the case against his own boss.

He added that the DG ACB had failed to take cognisance of a complaint filed against a Deputy Superintendent of Police, Pune who had asked one foreign national Thomas Joseph found overstaying to cough up Rs1 lakh for discharging a report that too by cheque in his State Bank of India account.

Khadse sarcastically remarked that when the Dy SP could not carry out the said work, he returned the amount in three cheques, two of which bounced. Patil stated that the government will grant the permission to prosecute Dr Pasricha if the charges are proved.
