Be prepared for further power cuts — at least for the next two months — as the demand for power has peaked to over 15,400 MW, thereby increasing the deficit to over 6,800 MW daily. So if you are now facing power outages for five hours daily, it could go up to six to eight hours as well.

This has forced Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) to introduce unscheduled hours of loadshedding across the state.

But as the decision on the number of hours of loadshedding falls in the jurisdiction of the Maharashtra Electricity Regulatory Commission (MERC), a hearing to this effect has been organised on April 16.

MSEDCL submitted a proposal to the MERC on Friday for the computation of load management. It has sought permission to stagger industries for one more day. It may be recalled that when the peak-hour demand was hovering around 5,500MW to 6,000MW, the MSEDCL had proposed two days staggering for industries. But following a huge outcry from the industrialists, they brought it down to one day.

For the much-touted Pune model, MSEDCL has proposed loadshedding of almost 2 ½ to 3 hours. Under the Pune model, industries adopted a strategy whereby they would not depend on the state utility for power, but make alternate arrangements by procuring power from their own captive capacities.

MSEDCL also proposed to scrap the Akshay Prakash Yojana for the next two months, by when the situation is expected  to return to normal. The decision was made the scheme did not abide by the protocol. As per the scheme, it would provide electricity for 21 hours, provided they reduce their demand to 20 per cent from 5pm to 5 am daily. As this protocol was not abided, the scheme has to be shut. Once the state overcomes the shortage, the scheme will be started again.
