The two-day executive committee of the National Sports Club of India (NSCI) came down hard on six prominent members accused of siphoning off crores from NSCI’s multi-crore indoor stadium project in Worli. It was decided that the six would no more have any role in the construction of the stadium. A newly-formed stadium committee would steer the project to completion, while a retired Delhi High Court judge would conduct a probe into the alleged Rs100 crore scam.
The six — Chairman BC Chawla, Mohan Sehwani, RS Arora, HK Ahuja, KB Makhija and Jaisingh Choradia — would, however, continue to function as per their club postings. The new stadium committee comprised the likes of JK Mehra, RK Mehra, HS Khurana, K Talreja and Grim Aggarwal. Also members like Dinesh Mehta, Sadanand Shinde and Deepak Mehra, who complained about the financial irregularities, were included in the stadium panel.
“These steps show our willingness to tackle the problems in the project. We have heard the agitating members,” said Subhash Chopra, NSCI President and Congress MLA. He added the Mumbai regional committee had sent a letter to architect Raj Peshori, asking him to explain how the project costs spiralled from Rs40 crore to Rs190 crore.
Members of the new stadium committee said that taking the project forward at this stage would be like pulling a dead horse. “It is a complicated process. We are meeting on Friday to discuss our action plan,” JK Mehra told DNA.
Dr Shyam Nichani, an NSCI member, demanded the resignation of the committee. “Under section 19(b) of the club’s Constitution, any member who brings disrepute to the club can be debarred. The Mumbai region members have brought us disrepute, and they must go,” he said.
