MUMBAI: The Board seems to be climbing down from its high pedestal on the much-debated issue of players’ endorsements. After recently announcing some tough measures and following them with some hard-talking, the Board of Control for Cricket in India on Wednesday handed out a ray of hope to the beleagured players whose pockets are being pinched.

“We’ve always maintained that any genuine grievance of the players will be considered,” Board secretary Niranjan Shah told DNA. “I’m not saying we’re not going to lift the cap or anything but we’ll certainly consider their request,” Shah said.

When asked if the Board is sympathetic towards’ players’ concerns, Shah said: “I’m not going say on anything that is under the purview of the working committee. But if they a have fair demand, we’ll go to the committee to take a fresh look on the issue.”

After its recent working committee meeting on Saturday, the BCCI announced no player can endorse more than three sponsors or products and no sponsor can contract more than two players. The announcement sparked off widespread condemnation from the agents and concerns from the players. An otherwise diplomatic Rahul Dravid came out openly suggesting there is a need for a healthy dialogue. The request was immediately turned down by Board vice-president Sashank Manohar.

But on Wednesday, the BCCI officials were talking in a rather mellowed voice.

“The cricketers are part of the family. I know some players are going to suffer financial loss but we have to ensure that they don’t overdo it,” Rajiv Shukla, another Board vice-president, said in New Delhi while adding that the cap limit on endorsements is yet to be decided.

Meanwhile the Board has also downplayed the issue of giving instructions to the selectors. Shah maintained that the picking the team is the selectors’ prerogative while Shukla dismissed reports that the BCCI has asked the selectors to drop senior players.
