NEW DELHI: Despite rumours that Ajitabh Bachchan had personally delivered an invitation to the Gandhi children to attend the Ash-Abhishek Bachchan wedding scheduled for April 20 in Mumbai, sources close to 10 Janpath told the DNA that no such invitation has been received so far. Even if such an invitation were to be received, it is unlikely that anyone from the Gandhi family will attend the marriage.

“The family is extremely busy with the elections in UP,” said a source. Even if it were not for the polls, it is highly unlikely that anybody from the family would have attended the wedding. It is hardly a secret that there has been a falling out between the two families and contacts between the two sides are few and far in between.

The only member of the Bachchan family whom the Gandhis have met in the recent past is Ajitabh’s wife Ramola Bachchan. Being a Samajwadi Party MP Jaya Bachchan is frequently in Delhi, but there has been no contact with the Gandhi family. While Amitabh usually avoids talking about or referring to the Gandhis, Jaya has not shied away from taking pot shots at the Congress president, adding to the bitterness.

This was not always the case. The association between the two families goes back to their times in Allahabad. Indira Gandhi and Amitabh Bacchan’s mother Teji Bacchan,
currently in hospital, were extremely close. Amitabh, in Sonia Gandhis own words, was her husband’s best friend. He joined politics at his friends’ bidding and even escorted Rahul Gandhi back from the United States when Rajiv Gandhi died and was by the side of the grieving family during that trying period. Rahul Gandhi too flew down to Mumbai for Harvanshrai Bacchans’ funeral.

The Bacchan’s were once a permanent fixture in the Gandhi household, but now are seen more often in the company of Gandhi family’s bete moirés like Amar Singh and Mulayam Singh Yadav.

Unlike the relationship with Arun Singh’s family, yet another of Rajiv’s erstwhile friends, there is no contact between the children from both sides.
