Two bookies arrested in Mumbai

Two alleged bookies were arrested on Wednesday by Maharashtra's Anti-Terrorist Squad for accepting bets on the ongoing cricket World Cup.

MUMBAI: The officials from the Anti-Terrorism Squad of the state police were taken by surprise when they found an imitation jewellery shop turned into a bookies den. Two bookies were arrested by the squad from Kalbadevi area on Tuesday night while accepting bets on the one-day international match between Australia and West Indies.
The arrested bookies have been identified as Narendra Mohanlal Jain, 42, and Madan Mohanlal Jain, 35, both residents of Bhuleshwar area in Kalbadevi.

According to the police, specific information had been received that bets were being accepted in room number 4 at Kalbadevi Jai Lakshmi Building. Acting on the tip-off, ATS officials raided the venue and arrested the duo.

“The imitation jewellery shop was used to accept bets. We have seized a recording machine, five mobile phones, a diary containing names of punters and cash worth Rs 12,000. The diary contained names of at least 30 Mumbai-based punters,” said police inspector Avinash Khanvilkar from ATS.
