MUZAFFARNAGAR: A Shariat court has ruled that pronouncing talaq only once can not lead to divorce and the woman can be reunited with her husband without tying knot with another man.

The court gave its ruling in the case of Maruf Ali, an advocate, who had threatened his wife to give talaq, according to court sources.

Wakila Begum in her plea before the Darululoom Deoband had said that she was given talaq when Ali warned her against visiting her sister's place. She later went to her sister's house and did not return, the sources said.

The Islamic seminary then issued a one-sided fatwa confirming the divorce.

However, Ali cancelled her plea saying that he had merely threatened her, following which the Darululoom referred the case to the Shariat court, asking it to decide the future of Wakila and Ali's relationship.

After hearing both the parties, the court, comprising of Maulana Imran, ruled that the divorce was incomplete and that Wakila can return to her husband.

Wakila had married Maruf two years ago at Budhana town of the district.
