Murder along railway tracks prompts police to scan 300 history-sheeters

Following two recent incidents that occurred near the railway tracks, the police have decided to scan the records of over 300 history-sheeters listed with the railway police.

The two incidents – a 21-year-old youth found dead on Sunday and the stabbing of Raju Gupta, a Lucknow-resident on Wednesday night – occurred near the railway tracks. While the body of the youth was found near the railway tracks between Charni Road and Grant Road, the stabbing occurred in the area between Grant Road and Mumbai Central station.

This uncanny coincidence has led police to suspect that the accused involved is someone who is conversant with the tracks. They also suspect that the assailant could have been arrested by the railway police earlier.

“We will scan the records of at least 300 criminals arrested by the Railway police from Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Churchgate and Mumbai Central stations. Some of them are drug addicts or were arrested for different crimes such as chain snatching, pick pocketing, among others,” said police inspector Sanjay Amrute of DB Marg police station. PI Amrute further added that the police would question these criminals.

Meanwhile, the Churchgate Railway police have informed Gupta’s family in Rajaji Puram in Lucknow about the attack. “Gupta stays with his grandmother and sister in Lucknow. We have informed them about the incident and they are likely to visit Gupta soon,” senior police inspector Dipak Bagwe with Churchgate Railway police station told DNA.

The two incidents this week have put a shadow of doubt on the earlier claims made by the police that Ravindra Kantrole is behind the serial killings. The police had earlier claimed that Kantrole, who was arrested by the Special Investigating Team (SIT), was the man they were looking for in connection with the serial killings.

Gupta, who was stabbed at least six times on his chest and suffered several injuries, managed to escape. Presently receiving treatment at Nair Hospital, Gupta is the only eye-witness who can throw some light on the recent incidents.

Five teams have been formed by the Railway police to nab the unidentified attacker. “We are keeping a constant vigil on the drug addicts and anti-social elements near the railway tracks between Churchgate and Mumbai Central,” said Sr PI Bagwe.
