India, Pak to jointly fight health problems

NEW DELHI: India and Pakistan on Wednesday decided to cooperate in tackling common health problems, including polio and bird flu.

The Working Group under the Indo-Pak Joint Commission decided that apart from cooperating in controlling polio and managing avian influenza, public-private partnership in healthcare and family welfare will also be taken up.

The other areas that were identified by the working group on Wednesday was health-related Intellectual Property Rights, Capacity Building in health sector and administrative structures relating to drugs and pharmaceuticals in the two countries and traditional systems of medicine.

The working group on environment discussed the decline in vulture population, conservation of migratory water birds and developing a clear development mechanism.

They also decided to cooperate in establishing Botanical Gardens in Pakistan, to share experience in Desert Afforestation and to protect environment and to undertake conservation and efficient use of energy resources.

Discussions were also held on Science and Technology on medicinal plants, herbal medicines, biotechnology, renewable sources of energy and popularisation of science.

The probable areas of cooperation were agreed on for holding joint workshops, seminars, exploratory visits, training and collaborative research.

To promote tourism, the working group identified human resource development in the sector, exchange of statistics/promotional material, familiarisation tours by travel agents and tour operators and the role of public-private partnership.

The joint working group of the two countries discussed production of quality seeds, agricultural research and quarantine issues concerning trade in livestock and meat.

Telecom policy and IT education and training were some of the areas that the two countries identified to cooperate in the IT and telecommunications sector.

E-governance, telemedicine and IT-enabled services were the other areas that would be taken up. In the area of education, the two countries will help each other in higher education and take up institutional linkages between University Grants Commission and HEC of Pakistan and exchange of printed material relating to educational development.

The experiences of NCERT and National Book Trust of India and National Book Foundation of Pakistan will be shared, apart from exchange of expertise in the field of elementary, secondary and adult education.

It was decided that the two countries will take steps to combat piracy of films, music and channel contents, while exchange information on radio, television programmes and films.

The working group also discussed issues concerning participation in seminars by journalists and media coverage of historical and religious events in the two countries.
