Director Jagmohan Mundhra asserts that the star’s approaching marriage has upped the curiosity for his film ‘Provoked’

The impending marriage of Aishwarya Rai to Abhishek Bachchan has not dampened the spirits of filmmaker Jagmohan Mundhra, who has tentatively scheduled the release of his Ash-starrer ‘Provoked’, in the second week of March.

“I don’t see Aishwarya’s marriage plans affecting the prospects of my film in any way. On the contrary, I can see that there’s considerable curiosity about the film in the wake of recent developments. Besides, she may not have a release for a long time after this film,” says Mundhra, adding that the film will be released with a record 500 prints over the world. “The world distributors of the film, Eros International are planning to make it a very big event. Eros was waiting to finish with its other releases—‘Omkara’,‘Salaam-e-Ishq’ and ‘Eklavya’ so that it could focus on the release of ‘Provoked’,” Mundhra adds.

The film portrays the true story of an Asian woman, (Kiranjit Alhuwalia), who after being subjected to violence for ten years by her British-born Indian husband, eventually set him on fire and killed him. The case was said to have helped change the British law for battered women. According to Mundhra, Aishwarya has given one of her best performances in the film. “I would term it as one of her most sincere performances, where she has gone way beyond all her other roles. The film has created a buzz ever since the Cannes screening,” he says.

More recently, Mundhra managed to secure a U/A certificate by agreeing to do away with some of the abusive language used in the film. There’s also talk that Mundhra is contemplating dubbing the film in Hindi, Punjabi, Tamil and Telugu to reach out to a wider Indian audience but the filmmaker is tight-lipped about these plans.

Meanwhile, Mundhra has good things to say about the Ash-Abhishek jodi. “They make an excellent pair. I’m happy for Aishwarya. She deserves all the happiness in the world,” he says.
