NEW DELHI: At least eight people have died as torrential rains over the past few days in several states of northern India have thrown normal life out of gear.

Today being a Sunday, people preferred to remain indoors as cold conditions revived.

In Uttar Pradesh, eight persons were killed and over a dozen injured in different incidents of house collapse and lightning.

While three persons were killed and one was injured as a wall collapsed in Chitrakoot town, two persons were killed and four injured in a similar incident in Varanasi. In yet another house collapse in Barabanki, a child was killed.

An old man died of cold in Fatehpur while a man was killed after being struck by lightning in Barabanki.

As wind-swept rains lashed several parts of the state, road traffic and communication networks went haywire.

It was breezy and chilly here as the national capital experienced light showers and an overcast sky throughout the day. The minimum temperature was 13.2 degrees celsius, four degrees below normal.

Delhi saw heavy rainfall on Saturday night accompanied by thunder, lightning and strong winds. The weatherman has forecast that the wet spell will continue for the next three days.

Heavy rain accompanied by thunder squalls lashed Punjab and Haryana for the second consecutive day on Sunday , uprooting trees, snapping telecommunication lines and crippling normal life.
 
11 killed, 24 hurt in bus accident

GHAZIABAD: At least 11 people, including two women and two children, were killed and 24 injured when a bus fell into a canal near Ramghat, 70 km from here, in
Bulandshahr district today.

"Eleven bodies have been recovered so far and search operations are expected to continue in the night to rescue around 15 people trapped in the canal," Bulandshahr Additional Supertintendent of Police Piyush Srivastava said.

The casualties were expected to rise as the bus, on its way from Ramghat to Kasganj, was packed beyond capacity with passengers.

Srivastava said the number of passengers in bus was not clear, but it veered out of control and fell into the canal after the driver lost control.

The injured were admitted in the Bulandshahr district hospital and the bodies sent for post-mortem, he added.
