NEW DELHI: Reinforcing the view that Delhi is not safe for the fair sex, a five-member gang made an abortive bid to abduct a girl student of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) inside the institute premises.

The men, said to be in an inebriated state, who had come to the university premises to attend a marriage ceremony tried to drag the girl into their car on Thursday night but was stopped by her friend.

The girl, a second year MA Sociology student, had gone for a stroll with her friend when the incident occured at Paschimabad area of the campus, JNU students claimed.

Having failed to abduct her, the men then sped away only to be stopped at the gate by security personnel and students, who gave them a good thrashing before handing them over to the police.

The university administration has filed a complaint with the local police, who, however, refused to divulge details about the incident, which has alarmed students of the premier institute.
