Makes up for poor past record with his all-round show

Ugrasen Singh didn’t fare well with the bat in the Harris Shield. But the southpaw entered the shorter version with an aim to prove himself for Rizvi Springfield, Bandra.

On Thursday, Singh demonstrated his credentials with the bat as well as ball to give Rizvi an overwhelming 210-run win over Don Bosco High School, Matunga to take them into the semi-finals of the Parle Super Cup Under-17 inter-school cricket tournament, being played at the Azad Maidan.

The southpaw hammered 79 off 74 balls and then took 4 for 21 with his right arm legspin, which earned him the second Man-of-the-Match award in a row. The first one was against Shailendra Education Society in the opening round.

The 15-year-old puts his success to better concentration. “In the Harris Shield I was not concentrating enough. I gave away my wicket playing silly shots. I spoke to Raju (Pathak) sir and he told me to just spent time at the wicket and runs will come,” said Singh.

Primarily a batsman, he has lately shone with the ball as well, scalping seven wickets in two matches in this tourney. “I started concentrating on my bowling recently. But my first preference is batting. I want to be a batting all-rounder,” quips Singh.

Batting first, Rizvi lost two early wickets. Singh along with Aamir Bhorania (75) then knitted a third wicket partnership of 115 runs which set up the platform for Imtiyaz Khan’s (50*) blitz in the slog overs. Rizvi set up a mammoth total of 322 in 45 overs.

Don Bosco never looked like overhauling the target and were restricted to 110 for 7 in reply. Rizvi will take on Balmohan Vidyamandir, Dadar in the semi-finals.

Balmohan defeated IES Raja Shivaji Vidyalaya, Dadar by 177 runs. Parth MN (91) and Ravi Shinde (71) helped Balmohan post 280 for 7. In reply Raja Shivaji were bundled for 103.

Off-spinner Rahul Deochake was the wrecker-in-chief with figures of 3 for 19. He was well supported by Ashutosh Ghagre and Sahil Madgaonkar, who took two wickets each.
