Sensex sets new peak before ending 71 pts down

The Sensex, after setting a record at 14,316.54, met with profit selling and closed with a loss of 70.76 points at 14,211.96.

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange failed to hold early gains on Monday as the benchmark Sensex, after setting a record at 14,316.54, met with profit selling and closed with a loss of 70.76 points at 14,211.96.

Similarly, the National Stock Exchange index Nifty set a record at 4167.15 before winding up at 4120.60, showing a fall of 27.10 points.

Trading activity was brisk as every rise in share prices attracted profit booking.

MUMBAI: The Bombay Stock Exchange benchmark index Sensex witnessed a volatile trade on Monday morning and was down by over 65 points on profit-selling by funds as well as retail investors.

The 30-share index which rose to 14,316.54 points at the outset, succumbed to profit-taking and quoted 65.88 points down at 14,216.84 points in the first five minutes of trading.

Similarly, the wide-based National Stock Exchange index Nifty was down by 20.70 points at 4127.00 after rising to 4167.15.

Major losers which dragged the Sensex were Grasim Industries, ACC, Gujarat Ambuja Cement, State Bank of India, HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Infosys Technologies, ITC Ltd and Hindsutan Lever.
