The chairman of selection committee has hinted that the former captain may be the answer to India’s opening woes in the World Cup.
NEW DELHI: Mighty impressed with Sourav Ganguly’s comeback to the one-day fold, chairman of selection committee Dilip Vengsarkar has hinted that the former captain may be the answer to India’s opening woes in the upcoming World Cup.
Speaking to BBC Hindi, Vengsarkar said he was impressed with the way Ganguly came back.
“I only have to say that if you see Ganguly, he played very well at Nagpur and he is going for opening. I hope he will do even better. And in the World Cup, I feel that he should open because he is a good opening batsman,” Vengsarkar said.
“Sourav can always score runs and grind the bowling also at the same time. He can also play a good attacking game. I hope that he will play very well at the World cup also,” he added.
Vengsarkar said India will have to improve in every department of the game to do well in the World Cup. “...there are a few shortcomings in the team. We would have to improve a lot in fielding and bowling, if we have to win the World Cup. I think we have to adapt to different conditions,” he said.
Asked about the worrying form and inconsistent performance of master blaster Sachin Tendulkar, the selection committee chief said, “I want to tell you that he is one of the best cricketers in the World. It isn’t proper to talk about him because he has set very high standards for himself, but he has been making 60-70 odd runs. The only thing he has not done is to score a 100. Because of the high standards set by him people start saying that he should be dropped. Sachin has always played for the team and he has performed really well and I hope that he will do well in the World Cup also. There is no question of him being dropped,’’ he added.
Asked about coach Greg Chappell’s equation with Ganguly , Vengsarkar said, “Both Ganguly and Chappell are professionals. They have done well for themselves.”
