Police probes 2005 case

The murders committed by the “beer-killer” may go as far back as 2005. Investigators are now looking at two incidents reported in the Marine Lines area that year, where two street dwellers were bludgeoned to death in a manner similar to the recent victims. “We have clubbed the eight killings (including Saturday’s) as the work of the same killer,” an officer told DNA. “These include the two cases from 2005 along with the incidents that occurred in 2006 and 2007.”

A special squad of the Mumbai police has prepared a confidential note stating the killer may be a former convict who is familiar with police investigation methods, and is therefore emboldened to committing crimes within the small stretch of 1.5 km. “The killer is very smart and constantly trying to misguide investigators,” a senior officer says.”

He appears to have previously observed the modus operandi of the police during murder investigations. He seems aware of police patrols at night, kills his victims between in the hours when train services have been stopped and flees just before the morning service begin. This ensures he is not spotted by anyone.”

Whodunnit?

Is the serial killer a resident of South Mumbai?

Investigators believe he may be, given his familiarity with the stretch between Churchgate and Grant road, where six of the bodies were found. But since the crimes were committed between the time the last train leaves Churchgate station and the first train pulls in, at around 4 am, the killer might be from the western suburbs.

Is he homosexual?

In five of the cases, there is evidence of sexual intercourse with the victims. On this basis, the police believe, the killer might be homosexual.

Is he a former convict?

The killer seems well-versed with investigating procedures, and officers feel he may have a criminal record.

Why has the police not been able to identify all the victims?

Except for the October 6, 2006, murder of a taxi driver, no other victims have been identified as they are mostly on the move from one place to another. Cops believe the victims — six of whom were Muslim, and three Hindu — are all between 20-35 years.

What is the killer’s method?

The killer approaches his victims and buys them food before taking them to a desolate spot and having sex with them. He then kills them.
