SRINAGAR: Three days after J&K chief minister Ghulam Nabi Azad called for sustained war against corruption, a senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer was suspended for his alleged involvement in the recruitment scam that has shaken the police department.

Niaz Mehmood Mir, a 1992 batch IPS, who was posted as deputy inspector general of police, Jammu-Kathua range, was suspended with immediate effect. An enquiry into his alleged irregularities in conducting physical endurance tests for selecting police constables in Jammu and Kathua districts is pending.

The government also declared the physical endurance test conducted by Niaz as null and void. It authorised Gopal Sharma, the J&K Director General of Police, to reconstitute the recruitment board and conduct the tests afresh.

“The DIG has been suspended,” said SP Vaid, Inspector general of police, Jammu range. “We have received the order which has placed the DIG under suspension regarding some irregularities in the recent recruitment of police constables. We are waiting for the enquiry report,” he said.

Niaz’s alleged involvement also figured in the Congress party meeting recently. One of the MLAs drew attention by highlighting the irregularities in passing physically unfit candidates in the test. This brought Niaz under the government’s scanner and he was asked to relinquish his post on Wednesday.

The action against the accused was taken three days after the chief minister called for a forceful drive against corruption, and the new legislation on the anti-corruption movement.

“Unless everybody amongst us is sincere and committed towards transparent management of affairs, the society cannot be freed from its ills,” Azad said.
