LONDON: Is Cherie Blair, the wife of the British Prime Minister becoming a Brahma Kumari? Associates of the successful lawyer are worried that Cherie’s new best friend, Dwina Murphy-Gibb may pull her into the ‘cult’ of which she is a member.

Blair’s close friendship with Murphy-Gibb, the wife of the former pop star Robin Gibb of the Bee Gees, first came to light when Britain’s first family spent a controversial Christmas holiday at the Gibbs’ £5.2 million beach house in Miami last month.

Dwina is a regular visitor to the Brahma Kumaris global retreat in Oxfordshire, and both she and her husband wear a red lapel pin with a tiny diamond given to them by Dadi Janaki, the 90-year-old head of the Brahma Kumaris to help them with meditation.

A British tabloid has described the Brahma Kumaris “as a female-led spiritual organisation which alienates people from their families, husbands from wives”.

It quoted Graham Baldwin, a cult expert who has counselled former Brahma members as saying “it encourages single women and widow to donate property and savings to Brahma and move into a group house”, and demands celibacy because “sexual intercourse pulls consciousness into the material domain”.

Cherie met Dadi Janaki at a function organised by Rights and Humanity, UK, but according to the Brahma Kumaris spokeswoman “as far as we are aware Mrs Blair has not expressed an interest in meditation”.

The PM’s wife is known to be influenced easily by friends and her current lifestyle guru happens to be Dwina. Cherie is also interested in alternative health therapies like crystal healing and thought field therapy, as well as being interested in India and its female population.
