Khan, Sanu’s driver for seven years, allegedly committed suicide in the singer’s bungalow in Andheri (W) on January 2. Khan was found hanging from the first floor room ceiling fan.
According to sources, Khan was brokering a deal for Sanu, who wanted to sell the bungalow, with a swimming pool, at an estimated Rs 4 crore.
The problem, police said, was Khan was unable to find a buyer, although he pinned his future on the deal. “After speaking to various people, we learned Khan was not getting a buyer who could pay him that much. I have no idea whether he finally found someone to buy the property,” said senior police inspector, Versova, Vijay Sonawane.
Khan was reportedly promised Rs10 lakh as commission if he brokered the deal. The police learned that dreams of getting a good cut-off prompted him to lead a lifestyle beyond his means.
“In the hope of a hefty amount, he took loans. He could not pay them back as the deal was not happening,” said a source.
When DNA Sunday tried to contact Sanu, his cell phone was answered by his associate Dwinder, who said that a deal was sealed by the playback singer himself. “We have made the deal,” said Dwinder, who refused to divulge details. A police inspector had reportedly visited the bungalow a day before Khan allegedly committed suicide. Sonawane denied any of his officers visited the property.
Investigating officer, police sub-inspector Madhukar Pradhan, said Khan was nice and would often visit the police station to talk to the cops. The police are investigating whether Khan was unable to repay the loans or whether he was upset the deal went to another person. The police ruled out foul play.
