NOIDA: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday visited Nithari village, the site of the ghastly serial killings of children and women, which has rocked the nation.

Gandhi reached the village early this morning and met the families of the victims and also inspected the areas adjacent to the infamous D-5, sector 31 residence of main suspect Maninder Singh Pandher where the macabre killings are said to have taken place.

In view of the Congress President's visit, the entire area around Nithari village had been cordoned off and officials of the Special Protection Group descended on the spot.

The victims' families were waiting with banners and posters demanding the harshest possible punishment for the culprits of the heinous crimes.

During the nearly 30 minute visit, Gandhi, who went inside the village to meet the families said, "they told me about what has happened here."

The UPA chairperson's visit assumes much political significance ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Assembly polls scheduled for this year.

UP Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav has so far not visited the village in this industrial township, which has suddenly catapulted into the national map.

Sonia slams Mulayam govt on law and order situation

NOIDA: Congress President Sonia Gandhi on Saturday visited Nithari village, the site of the ghastly serial killings of children, and put the Mulayam Singh government to task on the law and order situation in the state.

The UPA Chairperson, who spent nearly 30 minutes at the village, said that the Uttar Pradesh government had to order a CBI inuqiry into the killings under pressure, especially from the Congress.

"There is no law and order. You can see for yourselves the situation. Something or the other is happening everyday," she added.

The UPA Chairperson reached the village in the morning and met the families of the victims and inspected the areas adjacent to the infamous D-5, sector 31 residence of main suspect Maninder Singh Pandher where the killings are said to have taken place.

In view of the Congress President's visit, the entire area around Nithari village had been cordoned off and officials of the Special Protection Group descended on the spot.

"We have been demanding for a CBI probe right from the beginning. But the Chief Minister refused it. Now he has relented under pressure from the Congress," Gandhi said.

She, however, did not reply to questions on imposing President's rule in the state.

Gandhi, who spent some time with the families of the victims, said they briefed her about the incident and how it happened. She termed the killings as cruel and heinous.

Asked why she was visiting the village over a week after the incident first came to light, she said, "we had sent the PCC President, Salman Khursheed and the Minister of State for Home, Sri Prakash Jaiswal from Delhi. Now I am here."

She said the Women and Child Development Ministry has already set up a committee to inquire into the killings and the Centre is also probably thinking about announcing some kind of compensation.

The Congress President was accompanied by AICC General Secretary Ashok Gehlot.
