Accuses Mulayam Singh government of shielding culprits

LUCKNOW: The controversy over the mysterious disappearance of Meerut lecturer, Kavita Rani Chaudhry, shows no sign of retreat. On Friday, BSP president Mayawati demanded a CBI inquiry into the case, alleging that the Mulayam government was trying to shield the culprits.

Kavita’s brother has been demanding a CBI inquiry, but Mulayam Singh categorically refused it. The BSP has also demanded an imposition of the President's rule owing to “complete breakdown” of law and order in the state.

Mayawati attacked Mulayam saying that during her last tenure as the chief minister, she had ordered a CBI inquiry in the Madhumita murder case. She said she had also dropped her minister Amarmani Tripathi, who had been accused in the case.

“Mulayam should take inspiration from this,” she said.  “It’s my question to Mulayam, if he is afraid of a CBI inquiry. Why should he not go for it, when he has nothing to fear or hide?” Mayawati said at a press conference. She said she would refer the case to the CBI, if her party came to power in UP. BSP general secretary and MP SC Misra had earlier handed over a memorandum in this regard to governor TV Rajeshwar.

According to Meerut police, Kavita, who went missing since October 23, has probably been murdered. Cops are yet to recover her body. UP minister Chaudhry Babulal has already resigned after his name figured in the case.

Mayawati also lambasted the Mulayam regime for the law and order situation in the state. She said kidnapping has almost become an industry in UP.

“Earlier, only the children of the rich were being targeted. But now, criminals even kidnap children of the middle class people. So many children get kidnapped every year,” she added.
