This part of south central Mumbai — between JJ Marg to LT Marg via Bhendi Bazaar and Masjid Bunder — has seen no development worth the name and presents the decrepit face of the city.

The voters, on their part, are none the wiser, for, two of the three councillors in the area quit Samajwadi Party and joined Congress. Voter say their performance is not even average and that civic issues afflicting the area have been hardly tackled.

Some of the buildings are 7 to 8 decades old and have undergone many repairs. House gullies in most buildings have been breeding ground for mosquitoes as debris and solid waste is dumped there. “We had to conduct sessions for tenants to make them aware about the cleanliness of the gullies,” said Rashid Khan from Imamwada.

The three BIT colonies comprising 18 buildings are eagerly awaiting state government’s housing policy so that redevelopment sees some light at the end of the tunnel. “BMC has been telling us that our chawl cannot be developed as it is next to railway track,” said Satish Patade from Chinch Bunder BIT chawl. Other chawls in Sydenham compound and Imamwada also face the problem of house gullies, drinking water and poor drainage. All three sitting councillors have used up their funds for cleanliness of the house gullies and water supply. With a floating population of nearly 70,000, vehicular traffic has gone up tremendously. So has the number of hawkers in Imamwada, on IM Merchant Road, Bhendi Bazaar, and Musafirkhana. No party has shown the will to tackle the hawker menace, who have severely compounded the parking problem.

Godowns and offices have occupied 20 per cent of the total area. The godowns, which belong to the clearing and forwarding agents, are the cause of traffic jam. One-way roads here never follow the discipline. So the “No Parking” boards have cars parked right under. Bylanes which connect the Mohhemmed Ali Road flout the rules as hawkers and parked cars don’t let pedestrians even walk on the road. Politicians and councillors always try to woo the hawkers, who generally live in the same area by promising them special arrangement for hawking.
