MNC hands out 91 scholarships to Indian women achievers

MUMBAI: Secunderabad-based Shravani Yerram ,18, is over the moon. On Friday, she was selected one among the 91 recipients of the Fair and Lovely Scholarships 2006, which are given to the needy young women for pursuing graduate, postgraduate or doctorate studies. But unlike most of the other 90 recipients of the scholarship (of the value of up to Rs 1 lakh per annum), Yerram’s life in particular has been difficult from childhood.

Her father, Dashrath, is an auto-driver and his petty income has never been sufficient for his family of three. Yerram says: “Schooling had been very difficult as on many occasions. My  father did not have the money to pay my school fee.”

Though Yerram wished to pursue her graduate studies, she had second thoughts about it since her father could not afford the Rs 20,000 per annum fee.

But then, an advertisement of the Fair and Lovely Scholarships on a television channel in August gave Yerram hope.

“Immediately after seeing the advertisement, I applied for it and was anxiously waiting for a call for the personal interview,” she said. It was in the first week of September that she got a call for an interview.

On Friday, when Yerram received the scholarship certificate from the hands of Chandra Iyengar, Principal Secretary (Home), Government of Maharashtra, in Mumbai, it was certainly a moment to rejoice for the father-daughter duo. Dashrath said: “Now I don’t need to worry for my daughter’s education and am confident that she would do me proud.” Yerram has enrolled for the BCom course in Badruka College of Commerce in Secunderabad and also plans to prepare for Chartered Accountant exams simultaneously.

Over 1.5 lakh candidates had applied for the scholarships from across the country of which 91 were awarded the scholarships on the basis of their economic needs and academic performance. Ashok Venkatramani, Vice President, Skin Care, Hindustan Lever Limited (HLL) said: “We had initiated the scholarship in 2002 and over the past four years the response has increased.”
