Ace | For 2nd time in eight days a Parle Tilak Vidyalaya student returns a 10-wicket haul in an innings

For second time in eight days, a bowler took a 10-wicket haul. Parle Tilak Vidyalaya’s (Marathi) Aishwary Surve ran through the batting line-up of the CNM High School (Vile Parle) in the Khichadiya under-16 tournament at the Khar Gymkhana on Friday. For the record, Parle Tilak beat CNM by eight wickets to advance to the quarterfinals of the knockout tournament.

Interestingly, a lot of factors are strikingly similar between the two efforts apart from the bowler and the venue. On December 14, another Parle Tilak Vidyalaya bowler Pratik Dabholkar had effected a similar feat against IES Charkop. Both the bowlers are right-arm fast bowlers and both the hauls came in the same tournament.

“A coach cannot get a better news than this,” said an ecstatic Vijay Pawar, coach of the team. “However rare the feat may sound but my boys have proved that guided efforts can do wonders. I kept on telling Aishwary to pitch the ball just outside the off-stump so that when the ball swings in, the batsmen is caught unawares.”

But the haul also speaks a lot about Aishwary’s relentless pursuit of success, whose figures stood at 9-3-10-17. The week, though, has been extremely busy but nonetheless has been satisfying too for the 13-year-old. On Monday, he had scalped five against CJ High School in the under-14 Giles Shield tournament.

The very next day, Aishwary hammered 73 against Cardinal Gracias High School in a Harris Shield Plate Division Zone B final before taking three wickets towards the end of the same day. A day after losing the same final, Aishwary took to the field to give nightmares to the CNM batsmen.

Son of a retired Mazagaon Dock officer, Aishwary cleaned up the stumps of five hapless batsmen, got another four plumb in front of the stumps and had the remaining one caught behind. Agonisingly, Aishwary missed a hat-trick twice thanks to a couple of dropped catches by their wicketkeeper and Pratik in the slips.

When asked what was Pratik’s reaction to the haul, Aishwary said: “After I took five wickets, he asked me to make sure that I take all the wickets. He was equally sad when he dropped the catch when I was on hat-trick. He had missed a hat-trick too when he got that haul.”
