MUMBAI: After making it big in the development and manufacture of removable data storage media across the globe, New Delhi-based Moser Baer India Ltd is all set to diversify into the burgeoning Indian entertainment industry.

DNA Money first reported the development way back on July 6, 2006, stating that the company’s entertainment foray will be headed by the erstwhile chief executive of Saregama India’s films business, Harish Dayani. An announcement in this regard will be made by Moser Baer’s executive director Ratul Puri on Thursday in Mumbai.

The company’s entry is bound to force Shemaroo, Eagle, Time and Gypsy to do a hard-think on their strategies. Reliable industry sources also indicate that besides focussing on mainstream Bollywood movies for home video, Moser Baer will aggressively look at exploiting the regional movie content in a big way.

In fact, DNA Money has also learnt that Moser Baer’s entertainment division is already in talks with Supreme Audio & Video that currently holds rights for close to 400 south Indian films. However, it is not known whether the company has already managed to procure the home video rights from Supreme.

While company officials refused to divulge details, , industry sources indicated the new business will look at entertainment in a very broad manner. “Starting with home video foray, the company is looking at changing the entire market dynamics of this entertainment category. Offering entertainment content on VCD and DVD format, the company intends to play on the pricing strategy retailing these at a very competitive pricing,” said a source.

The Indian legitimate home video segment is estimated at Rs 200 crore, while the pirated market is believed to be 100 times bigger.
