LONDON: Prince Charles has decided to lead his country’s efforts at reducing carbon emissions by example. The heir to the British throne pledged to reduce his carbon footprints by making sweeping changes to his personal and official lifestyle.
Instead of travelling by private jets and helicopters, Prince Charles has promised to use scheduled flights and train services along with his subjects wherever he can, of course, subject to security.
The Prince of Wales has been known to be a great supporter of greener living running his own organic food company called Duchy Originals supporting locally produced goods.
The Prince’s aides said that using cleaner transport such as national rail services was now a priority for the prince and his staff, but they ruled out his royal highness cutting across London on the Underground or arriving at official functions by bicycle.
The changes to the Prince’s travel arrangements are part of part of a wider review of the carbon footprints of all three of his residences and the activities of his 21 personal and 105 full-time staff.
Next week the Prince will take delivery of Jaguar cars adapted to run on biodiesel fuel that he will use in place of some flights. His residences will switch to green electricity.
Prince Charles made the pledge just before he announced an initiative to encourage business leaders to introduce environmental accounting. “We are living on borrowed time, and it is our grandchildren who will have to pay off the debt and we owe it to them to do something,” said Prince Charles.
Duchy Originals will help test a range of techniques for environmental accounting in which an assessment of the carbon emission cost of producing each packet of biscuit will be published on the package.
