MUMBAI: The Mumbai police have stepped up security as over 20 lakh followers of Dr Ambedkar are expected to converge at Shivaji Park to observe his 50th death anniversary.

The situation, already volatile, is "complicated" by the fact that the anniversary coincides with the annual Urs of the Baba Maqdoomi Dargah and the 14th anniversary of the Babri Masjid demolition.

"I am personally looking at the daily itinerary to prevent any mishaps like stampedes," said Arup Patnaik, joint commissioner of police.

"Every year, over 10 lakh followers converge at Chaityabhoomi," said Dnyaneshwar Phadtare, deputy commissioner of police. "This year, we expect the number to double as it is his 50th death anniversary."

The police have set up 15 watch towers, installed 22 CCTVs and four big screens to watch "live darshan". Plainclothes officers will be on duty along and suspects will be frisked.
