LONDON: He was criticised for being ‘blond, but not Bond’. He was even called ugly last year when he was named as the 007 to take over from Pierce Brosnan – but last night it was a different story.

Daniel Craig arrived for the world premiere of Casino Royale, the 21st Bond film to resounding cheers from thousands of fans who had waited for him in the damp Autumn weather outside the Odeon in Leicester Square, and the Queen and Duke of Edinburgh inside the theatre making it a royal performance.

Craig, who becomes the sixth actor to don the mantle of the secret agent on Her Majesty’s Service created by Ian Fleming, has also been the most controversial choice to play the character, but much of that was put to rest by the 38-year-old’s performance that has received rave reviews.

Dressed to kill in a black, single-breasted three-piece Dunhill suit with his beautiful girlfriend Satsuki Mitchell on his arm, Craig mingled with the fans signing autographs and posing for pictures. “He looks like he really could kill someone, and you don’t notice his hair,” said one fan outside the cinema hall.

Once derided for being pasty and a wimp, not sexy enough to woo Bond girls, Craig’s toned torso is visible for everyone to examine in the film as he emerges from the sea in a pair of blue trunks – reminiscent of Ursula Andress in the first Bond film Dr No. The result is not a wimp, but he is now being seen as one of the sexiest Bonds ever and a veritable eye-candy.

Ajay Chowdhury, spokesman for the Bond International Fan Club puts Craig’s performance up with the best of Bond. “He is certainly one of the best Bonds we have ever had and I would put him up with there with Sean Connery, the first ever Bond” said Chowdhury.

Craig has been quick to say that he will be starring in the next Bond film to curb any further criticism that may call him a one-film-wonder.
