NEW DELHI: After its acquisition of 50 per cent stake in Ten Sports, Zee Group said there could be a merger of the Dubai-based channel with its sports channel, Zee Sports.

The Subhash Chandra-promoted group also said its Vice-Chairman Jawahar Goel would take over as Chairman of Ten Sports in a year, replacing present incumbent Abdul Rahman Bukhtair.

"The possibility of merger of the two sports channel (Zee Sports and Ten Sports) is not ruled out," Zee Sports Business Head, Himanshu Mody said.

He said details of the future course of action after the stake acquisition would be worked out shortly and a blueprint was expected by December.

"Teams of the two channels will meet in eight to 10 days to discuss future strategy on synergising the functioning of the two channels," Mody said.

Post-acquisition in Ten Sports, Zee will have four of its directors, including Jawahar Goel, Puneet Goel, Deepak Jain and Yogesh Radhakrishnan on the board of Ten Sports, he said.

Mody said Ten Sports would continue to have three of its directors on the channel's board.

Chris McDonald will continue to be CEO of Ten Sports, he added.

As a result of the acquisition, Zee will get access to Ten Sports' infrastructure in Dubai, which could also be utilised for other programmes, besides sports broadcasts, Mody said.

Mody said the post of chairman in Ten Sports would be rotated alternately between the two companies.
As Jawahar Goel is the senior most director among Zee nominees, he would take over as the chairman next year.

Asked whether the two channels would be merged, Mody said the issue would be looked into in "due course of time".

Mody also said the two channels share operational synergies and would have better economies of scale.
