NEW DELHI: Sealing of commercial establishments in residential areas continued in the capital on Monday after a weekend break with the central government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) ready to approach the Supreme Court again on the issue.
"The sealing will be carried out in central and south zone on Monday as usual. Like last week, we will target some bigger establishments to clear any misconceptions that the drive is hurting the small traders and not the influential," said a top MCD official.
He added that the MCD and the central government would once again file petitions in the apex court on Monday to seek mercy for thousands of traders in the city.
The civic body is likely to present the ground realities in the court and express its determination to uphold the rule of law. Both the urban development ministry and the MCD will also highlight the plight of traders and the magnitude of unemployment the drive will create.
On Sunday, the MCD clarified that the traders who had stopped commercial activities in illegal shops following the Supreme Court directive needed to file an affidavit if they wanted to avoid sealing of their premises.
After a three-day sealing drive under heavy police security cover, the civic body said in a public notice, "The owners/occupiers who have stopped the misuse of their premises according to the Supreme Court directions are required to submit an affidavit to the zonal deputy commissioner of the MCD to avoid sealing of their premises."
"They should have come out with this advertisement earlier and not a week after resuming the sealing drive," said Yogesh Baweja whose house in Kilokri in south Delhi was sealed.
Baweja had also submitted an affidavit with the undertaking that his premises were no longer being used for commercial activities.
Since November 8, civic authorities have sealed over 350 commercials units, including guesthouses, restaurants, and even a couple of playschools. On November 6, the apex court dismissed three petitions of the MCD and central government and directed authorities to resume sealing immediately.
