MUMBAI: In a throwback to the hit-and-run case involving Bollywood star Salman Khan four years ago, six persons, including two children, were killed in their sleep and 14 injured when they were run over on Sunday at the same spot here by a car carrying late night party revellers apparently drunk.

The incident happened at around 3:45 am when the car mowed down six construction workers from Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka sleeping on the pavement of Carter Road in Bandra, police said. The dead were three women, a man, a five-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy.

The dead were identified as Chinnama Loda (30), Mani Mamma Tinnma (25), Savita Timanna (5), Laxmimanna Raju Malla (25), Ajamma Basappa (35), Devu Basappa (8).

Fourteen people were injured, of whom six men and two women were admitted to Bhabha Hospital in Bandra while the other six were discharged after a check-up.

Police arrested all the six persons in the car, including Aliston Pareira (21) who was in the driver's seat.

While Pareira was booked under Section 304 of the Indian Penal Code (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), others were booked under Bombay Prohibition Act as all of them were drunk, police said.

Additional Commissioner of Police Bipin Bihari said the occupants of the car, including a girl, were returning from a late night party. All of them were aged 18 to 20, he added.

The Bandra metropolitan magistrate's court remanded Aliston to police custody till November 14 but released the other five travelling by the car Craig Pareira, Kenroy Jacob, Curt D`Lima, Marvin Pinto and Ronela Santamay on bail of Rs 5000 each.

A liquor bottle was found in the car in which the six persons were returning from the party, Deputy Commissioner of Police VK Chaubey said.

The mishap is a deja vu of sorts as in the same area in 2002 Salman's Land Cruiser had mowed down three persons sleeping on pavement, killing one. Khan is out bail and his trial is on.
