WASHINGTON: A former Congressional page said he had sex with disgraced former United States lawmaker Mark Foley, according to a newspaper report on Sunday, as an explosive Washington political scandal continued to unfold.

The former page told the Los Angeles Times that he was 21 when he and the Florida Republican Congressman had sex, and that Foley's overtures began shortly after he left the Congressional page work-study program for high school students.

He told the daily that the sexual encounter with Foley occurred at the Congressman's Washington home in the fall of 2000, while he working as an intern in an unrelated program.

The former page said he began receiving messages from Foley while in college.

He told the daily he is uncertain how Foley knew his college instant-message name, but assumed the lawmaker had access to a directory listing former pages' whereabouts.

The told the Times that some of the explicit e-mails from the ex-Congressman assessed the sexual orientation and physical attributes of underage pages, but made clear he had decided to wait before making advances.

"I always knew you were a player, but I don't fool around with pages," declared one instant message from Maf54, a screen name Foley used in numerous exchanges with former pages.

The young man told the LA Times that he and his fellow pages were surprised that it took so long for Foley "to get caught," he said.

Foley resigned his House seat September 29, after the disclosure of sexually suggestive messages to former pages.

The emails, and what has been perceived as an inadequate response by Republican leaders in Congress, sparked an explosive political scandal and prompted an House Ethics Committee investigation.
