2 German journalists shot dead in Afghanistan

Two German journalists were shot dead in northern Afghanistan in the early hours of Saturday, the interior ministry said.

KABUL: Two German journalists were shot dead in northern Afghanistan in the early hours of Saturday, the interior ministry said.
 
The man and woman were shot in their tent in the province of Baghlan at about 1:20 am, said a spokesman for the interior ministry that handles police affairs.
 
The two were travelling from Baghlan province to the central province of Bamiyan. They had a driver but there was no word on him.   
 
Documents indicated they worked for Deutsche Welle.   
 
Violence has surged across Afghanistan this year, mostly in the south and east where Taliban insurgents have been battling foreign and government troops.   
 
Attacks have also taken place in Kabul, the west and the north but Baghlan province has been quiet recently.   
 
Crime has surged across Afghanistan since the fall of the Taliban.   
 
Germany has a contingent of about 2,750 troops with NATO's Afghan mission.
