BANGKOK: Four police officers were injured Saturday in the first bomb attack in Thailand's troubled south since a military coup that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra.

The four officers were preparing for a visit to a mosque in the southern province of Pattani by the country's Crown Prince Vajiralongkorn when a roadside bomb exploded, police said.

The ouster of Thaksin had raised some hopes that the Muslim general who led Tuesday's coup could help ease separatist violence that surged from January 2004 in the three Muslim-majority southern provinces.

Thaksin's decision to impose emergency rule there in 2005 was widely criticized.

Coup leader General Sonthi Boonyaratglin, the first Muslim to head the Thai army, was previously tasked with resolving the bloody conflict that has claimed more than 1,400 lives.

He had offered to hold peace talks with Islamic separatists and there had been optimism that his conciliatory approach would produce results.

There is confusion among analysts over the exact cause of violence in Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala provinces, with Malay separatism, religious extremism, and border-related organized crime all playing a part.
