YAVATMAL (Maharashtra): A mob here on Saturday set a bus on fire during a bandh called to protest against the Malegaon bomb blasts that killed 31 people and injured nearly 300.
 
Members of a community had declared a strike and torched a Pusad-Purangi bus of the Maharashtra State Transport Corporation at 1.30 pm at Loni after telling the passengers to alight, according to DSP Abdur Rehman.
 
However, police personnel reached the spot in time and brought the situation under control, he added.
 
No arrest has been made, he said.
 
A fire engine and additional police forces were sent from Pusad to Loni, police said.
 
District Guardian Minister Manoharrao Naik and Cotton Marketing Federation chairman NP Hirani went to the spot and appealed to people to maintain peace and communal harmony.
 
An all-party peace rally was taken out in Ner tehsil of the district and a memorandum was handed over to the tehsildar by delegates to register their protest against the Malegaon blasts.
 
A bandh was also observed in Ner, Ladkhed and Arni. A delegation of 300 Muslims submitted a memorandum to the tehsildar at Arni.
 
According to the police, community members will submit memoranda at Digras and Dargha on Monday to protest against the incident.
 
The situation in other parts of the district was peaceful, police said.
