MUMBAI: If close rival Mukesh Ambani is busy charting a roll-out of one of his retail venture formats — Fresh Plus — in Hyderabad, Chennai-based discount retailer R Subramanian is all set to hit Mumbai with his Subhiksha stores.

The roll-out for both Reliance and Subhiksha is scheduled for September end or early October this year.

DNA Money, through reliable sources, has learnt that the low-price food, grocery, pharmacy and telecom retailer also has plans to start stores beyond Mumbai and Pune at a later date. “Close to 70 locations have been finalised and signed across various locations in Mumbai, Thane and Navi Mumbai. With an average store size in the range of 2,000 - 2,500 sq ft, the stores are being housed in and around pockets with high residential population,” the sources said.

When contacted, the company officials refused to comment.

The set-up cost of each outlet, excluding rentals and manpower, is estimated to be upwards of Rs 5 lakh. It is understood that promoters have in all earmarked between Rs 100-150 crore for their retail network and distribution centre facility in Maharashtra.

Though the chain operates through physical retail stores in all the markets it is currently present in, the source indicated that a new model to effectively tap the home-delivery market will be adopted for Mumbai. “This will be the first time that Subhiksha will be doing something like this.

Having recently added telecom products to its range of retail offerings, the promoters plan to adopt a two-pronged strategy to cater to this market. “Retailing of telecom products will happen through both the supermarket format and through standalone stores,” the sources said.

The company has not yet decided on the name of its standalone telecom products retail chain. However, the source indicated that it will be done under the Subhiksha brand itself.
