DUBAI: With a UN Security Council deadline looming before it to halt sensitive nuclear activities, Iran on Saturday opened its heavy water production plant and claimed its controversial atomic programme is "transparent" and poses no threat to any country.

Inaugurating a heavy water production project in the Iranian town of Arak, which went into operation, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said "the message of the Iranian nation is peace, calm and co-habitation with all nations based on justice...We are no threat to any nation, even the Zionist regime."

During his speech, the Iranian leader declared that Iran would never abandon its nuclear programme and repeated that nuclear weapons is not the country's goal.

Iran "does not withhold any information about its nuclear activities" and that the programme mainly aims to promote public welfare and peace.

"Unfortunately, today most of those having claims about our nuclear activities are the first to oppose and violate peace. They are using all scientific achievements to their own benefits and in line with their political interests," he said, without referring to any country.

Ahmadinejad said that instead of producing nuclear weapons, it is better to use atomic energy to provide human welfare as well as promote peace, security and justice.

"The discriminatory approach of some powers to the world is based on their bullying features and given their disregard for ethics, they make instrumental use of their policies, economy, art and advertisement in their own interests and assume that others act in a similar way," he was quoted by Iranian news agency as saying.
