High-power explosives were recovered and two CID constables are among the arrested.

KOLKATA: Nine powerful bombs and explosives were recovered on Friday from various parts of the north Bengal business hub, Siliguri and two constables of the Crime Investigation Department (CID) of the state police have been arrested along with two suspected militants for suspected links with the ISI.

According to the police, the explosives which could have blown up large parts of Siliguri, could have been planted by elements linked to terror outfits in Pakistan.

Inspector General (North Bengal), KL Mina said the police received specific tips about planting of these bombs on the basis of which raids were conducted across the town along with the bomb disposal squad of the army. Two activists of the Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), a separatist organisation in the region - Puran Biswakarma and Paritosh Roy and two constables of Crime Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal police, Biswajit Majumdar and Kailash Singh Roy, have been arrested. Police and investigative agencies suspect that those arrested may have close links with Pakistani intelligence agency, ISI. “Five bombs were recovered from two petrol pumps which are adjacent to each other. The bombs were powerful enough to blow off a major portion of the town,” Mina said.

Apart from bombs, a briefcase carrying bomb-monitoring units, copper connection wires and other explosive accessories have been recovered. Mina said that following the discovery of the bombs and the explosives accessories, red alert has been announced in all the six districts of north Bengal.

The borders in north Bengal with Nepal, Bhutan and Bangladesh have been sealed and the Border Security Force (BSF) battalions posted there had been asked to be extra alert. When contacted, the Inspector General (law & order), Raj Kanojia, told DNA that investigations and interrogations are on to identify the links of those arrested in this connection. “Though we are yet to get any specific input about their connection with any external force, investigations are on and we will hopefully uncover all the details of their contacts very soon,” Kanojia said.
