The peace prize, the most celebrated of the Nobel honours, will be announced on October 13 in Oslo by the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
The names of the nominees are kept a closely guarded secret by the Nobel Committee, but those who submit nominations are allowed to disclose their choice. The list for the peace prize is however known to comprise names of 191 individuals and organisations.
Ahtisaari, who has mediated in a number of peace processes, is known to be on the list.
The other candidates known to be in the running are Irish rock stars Bono and Bob Geldof for their fight to eradicate poverty, and Indians Kailash Satyarthi, head of the Global March Against Child Labour, and spiritual leader Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.
Athisaari, oversaw talks last year that led to a peace agreement between the Indonesian government and rebels in Aceh province and he is currently the UN special envoy to talks on the future status of Kosovo.
The Tiananmen Mothers are also candidates for their fight for a democratic China.
Last year, the peace prize went to the International Atomic Energy Agency and its Egyptian director general Mohamed ElBaradei.
Each Nobel prize this year will carry a prize sum of 10 million Swedish kronor ($1.39 million), to be shared if the prize is awarded to more than one laureate.
