Oblivious to the tragedy that had just hit her family, little Kajal played on in the most unlikely of all places — the mortuary at JJ Hospital.

While Kajal, who turns three on Thursday, is too young to understand the magnitude of the loss, her mother Kiran Singh, widowed at 21, is only too aware of what is to follow.

Chandrapratap Singh, 22, a private security guard at Shahrukh Khan’s bungalow Mannat, was shot dead by another security guard late on Monday night. He died before being admitted to the hospital. Personnel from Tops Security called Kiran at 5 am on Tuesday to inform her about the incident.

“He was so young and we had our whole life ahead of us,” said Kiran, as she waited outside the mortuary at JJ Hospital, where her husband’s body was brought for a post-mortem.

Tears welled up but refused to stream as Kiran tried to put up a brave front for her daughter. “It’s Kajal’s birthday on Thursday and we were planning to celebrate,” said the mother, her voice trailing off as she remembered where she was.

The couple’s son, Karan, 4, is back home in Allahabad, where the rest of the family is. “I have informed my parents and relatives. We will be taking the body to Allahabad for the funeral,” said Kiran. While authorities at Tops Security had helped her, there had been no communication from the superstar so far, she said. “My husband was a good fun-loving man.

“He never fought with anyone all these years. He had no bad habits and I never heard him raise his voice even once. As far as I know my husband had no problems with him (the man who shot him dead).”

Chandrapratap, a class XII pass, came to Mumbai from Sankargad near Allahabad in 2003 hoping to find a job.

He had worked as a security guard for Globus for two years before getting posted at Shah Rukh Khan’s bungalow, where he had been working for the past seven months.

“I came to Mumbai three months ago, hoping to set up a home here. Little did I know that my home would fall apart so soon,” said Kiran.
