NASHIK/AHMEDABAD/VADODARA: Heavy rains lashed parts of Maharashtra and Gujarat, giving nightmares of the last year's deluge.

Three army units have been deployed in Solapur, Satara and Kolhapur in Maharashtra. A flood alert has also been sounded in the low-lying areas of Pune. In Nashik, continuous rains since last Wednesday have raised the levels of the rivers. However, proper flood water management by the district administration has averted flood in the region.

Last year when rains caused havoc all over Maharashtra, only Nashik put up an effective model of flood water management, averting flood in the district. This year too the district administration geared up since April-May and put its plan in action. "The basic principle of flood-water management is controlled releasing of water from various dams, considering their capacity, rainfall during the period and speculations for future rains in the season," said Ravindra Jagtap, deputy collector, Nashik.

"There is some risk involved as we are releasing water even before the dams are filled to their maximum capacities. So far we have been successful and the situation is under control. It requires a lot of monitoring on many fronts but the teams at every level are doing their best," he added.

The district administration has alerted people living on the banks of river Godavari following rise in water level after the release of water from Gangapur dam, official sources said. In Gujarat, four people have died while one person is missing. Around 25,000 people have been evacuated from 66 villages across the state while life guards, boats, trained swimmers and divers have been kept on standby mode.

Electricity supply was disrupted in thousands of villages. District administration has swung into action with several pre-emptive measures to avoid a repeat of the previous monsoon. Savli registered rainfall of 30 mm on Sunday. Ahmedabad has already had over 65 per cent of the season's total rainfall.

Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi called for an urgent meeting on Sunday afternoon to assess the rain situation in the state.Train services were severely hit as rail tracks between Kim and Kosmba in South Gujarat remained inundated while five trains were cancelled. Around 2,500 food packets were distributed in Dabhoi region, one of the worst-hit areas in this rain.
