NEW DELHI: What is the similarity between Delhi and Mumbai? One heavy downpour and the roads are clogged, huge traffic jams occur and chaos ensues in the city. Also, just like its counterparts, the BMC in Mumbai, the MCD too is indulging in a blame game.

On Tuesday, with 20 mm of rain the city came to a rude grinding halt for about two and a half hours. On Wednesday again, Delhiites were stuck in traffic jams for an hour and a half. Most roads were waterlogged and the risk of open manholes made them dangerous.

Delhi urban development and PWD Minister Dr AK Walia also took a round of the streets and seemed quite disheartened with the results. There are over 1,296 drains in the Capital and less than a third have been cleared at present. Civic agencies have also acceded that almost 70 per cent of the existing drains need re-modelling.

Meanwhile, Dr Walia also asked officials to get manholes opened to determine the actual cause of water-logging. He felt that the entire menace was due to the laxity of engineers who were not doing their job well. As a result, two junior engineers of the PWD were suspended and warnings were issued to a few assistant engineers.
