WASHINGTON: The Speaker of the United States House of Representatives was hospitalized on Thursday for treatment of a bacterial infection in his leg, his office said.

House Speaker Dennis Hastert, 64, suffers from cellulitis, an inflammation of his skin, which was treated with intravenous antibiotics at the National Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, north of Washington.

Hastert's doctor said the Republican House leader will be off his feet for 72 hours and should be able to return to a normal schedule next week.

Cellulitis can spread rapidly without treatment.
