BEIJING: An earthquake measuring 5.1 on the Richter scale struck south of Beijing on Tuesday, rattling office buildings in the Chinese capital, state press said.

The quake struck at 11:56 am (3:56 GMT) with the epicenter in Wenan city, in northern Hebei province, around 100 kilometers from Beijing, China Central Television reported.

The earthquake shook high-rise buildings in Beijing, although there were no signs of damage in the city's central business district.

"The quake was clearly felt in the Beijing region," the report said, without giving details about whether there was any damage in Wenan or elsewhere.

Office workers and commuters on Beijing's elevated expressways felt the rattling but traffic continued to flow smoothly.

“The air-conditioner outside my window shook rapidly -- I didn't know what was happening,” said Sun Wenhao from his 10th-floor office in downtown Tianjin, 90 km northeast of Wenan.

Staff at the Wenan Renmin Hospital said they had not received emergency calls connected to the tremor, the epicentre of which the US Geological Survey said was 10 km below the Earth's surface.

China is hit by frequent earthquakes, with most hitting remote rural areas.

This month marks the 30th anniversary of a quake that killed 270,000 people in Tangshan, east of Beijing.
