SRINAGAR: The Jammu and Kashmir Light Infantry Regimental Centre will initiate Operation Sadbavana next month, an initiative by the army to help Kashmiri youth achieve their IT career goals. The army will sponsor meritorious students for A and O level computer courses.

The army will pay 50 per cent of the students’ course fees beginning July 3. The army will also help graduates find placement in various IT companies across the country.

“Our aim is to create employment opportunities for Kashmiri youth. That is why we have decided to pay at least a portion of the students’ fees. Also, we will provide boarding facilities in our centre. Students from far-flung areas, who cannot afford the extra expenditure, will be able to avail of this accommodation,” said Brigadier Shakti Prasad, Commandant of the regiment.

There are 45 seats for O level courses and 25 seats for A level courses at DOEACC. The fee for O level has been fixed at Rs17,680 and Rs3,565 for A level courses.

“We have received 500 applications from boys and girls for 70 available seats in the two courses. In 2005, we had received 300 applications,” said Colonel JS Budhwar.

The army has also decided to take up the issue of placement with IT giants.

“IT is a big industry. Last month the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) met Chief Minister Ghulam Nabi Azad. We hope that FICCI will set up some businesses here. We will also take up the issue with IT industry bigwigs so that Kashmiris will be considered solid contenders for IT jobs,” said Prasad.

The Army’s endeavour has been received well by the students in Kashmir.

“This will clear misconceptions about the army in Kashmir. This is a good step. It will help us secure our future,” said Saddam Ullah Jaswal, who was one of many students who appeared for the O level test.
