ST LUCIA: Play was called off on the fourth day of the second cricket Test between India and the West Indies owing to overcast conditions and wet outfield caused by persistent rain here on Tuesday.

Rain had intervened to improve West Indies' chances of saving the second Test against India when the entire morning session on the fourth day was washed out at Gros Islet on Tuesday.

West Indies were 43 for one in their follow-on innings, needing 373 to make India bat again.

India had scored 588 for eight declared in their first innings and then dismissed the West Indies for 215 by tea on the third day.

With steady showers at Beausejour Stadium throughout the morning, and captain Brian Lara at the crease on 15 not out, West Indies have growing hopes of saving the match and keeping the four-Test series level at 0-0.

Umpires Simon Taufel and Asad Rauf conducted several inspections of the outfield on Tuesday, but the rain never relented, and play was eventually called off about half-hour before tea.

The weather outlook from the St Lucia meteorological office has predicted more of the same on Wednesday's fifth and final day. "Cloudy to overcast with periods of moderate to heavy showers and isolated thunderstorms," a report on their website indicated.

The Met Office added that a tropical wave - a typical phenomenon at this time of the year in the Caribbean - is producing cloudiness, showers, and thunderstorms over the islands, including St Lucia, at the southern end of the Caribbean chain.
