HONG KONG: Staying up late to watch too many matches could leave Asian football fans with long-term health problems, a medical expert said on Wednesday.

A fan could pile on up to five kilos by gorging his way through an extra 40,000 calories worth of midnight snacks and drinks over the course of the month-long tournament, estimated James Lam, president of the Hong Kong Association of Sports Medicine and Sports Science.

Armchair fans could suffer from sleep deprivation and problems related to poor posture by watching too many games, Lam said.

"This could cause muscle problems like bad pain and neck pain," he said. "Also, when eating habits are not good, people are at risk of getting peptic ulcers."

Lam urged football fanatics to avoid beer during late night sittings, and to keep up regular exercise to mitigate stress from World Cup viewing, which could put people at greater risk of heart disease.

Millions of fans across Asia will tune in to watch the World Cup matches live despite kick-off times ranging from 8 pm to 3 am, because of the time difference with the host country Germany.
