NEW DELHI: Four days after it hurriedly called a press conference and declared Rahul Mahajan’s innocence, the Apollo hospital on Tuesday seemed desperate to wash its hands of the matter.

Despite repeated pleas by Mahajan that he was not feeling well, the hospital gave him a ‘fit for discharge’ certificate in the morning.

As the news flashed on TV, a police team reached the hospital at 10am. A two-hour drama ensued with Mahajan reluctant to leave. Finally, family members prevailed upon him to leave the hospital.

With all eyes trained on the gates of Apollo’s emergency wing, Mahajan was wheeled out at about 3.30pm. The Rapid Action Force was stationed outside to tackle a possible media frenzy.

As flashbulbs went off, Mahajan was rushed to a Toyota Qualis, which, escorted by a police Gypsy, reached the Tughlak Road police station at 4pm. Ten minutes later, Mahajan was rushed to the Patiala House court. Following the hearing, he was taken to AIIMS for a medical check-up.

The Apollo volte-face came after police threatened it with charges of obstruction of investigation and tampering of evidence. “We have been cooperating with police at every stage of the investigation. Whatever the police need, we will willingly furnish,” hospital PRO Karan Thakur said.

A team of Apollo doctors, which was summoned by police on Monday, again appeared at the Tughlak Road police station on Tuesday.

But now that the hospital is cooperating with the investigation, it appears unlikely that police will pursue the matter any further. Additional DCP (New Delhi) Manish Aggrawal said: “Right now, our attention is focused on ferreting out what happened after Mahajan was brought to Apollo: the drugs that were administered to him and the tests that were carried out. We are still questioning the doctors involved in his treatment. Only after this is done will we look into the allegations against the hospital.”
